Audio Options For Snowboarders – Music On The Mountain

A lot of snowboarders like to ride with music playing – and that means some kind of headphones. But there are many options when it comes to getting your mp3s on the hill. Which style is best suited for snowboarding?

This series if going to explore a range of audio options – taking a look at examples of each and asking how suitable they are for shredders. And what about the “snowboard” related brands like Skullcandy, WeSC or Nixon? Do you get good quality sound and robust headphones? Do they have specific design features that make them good for use on the mountain? Or do they just look good?

Here are the categories:

  • In-ear headphones
  • On-ear headphones
  • Over-ear headphones
  • Built-in helmet audio
  • Hook-on/wrap-around/ear-clip headphones

In considering the different designs available to choose from, we’ll look at the following headphones. There really are hundreds out there on offer, so these will serve as examples from each class:

  • Skullcandy Titan Ear Buds
  • Nixon Wire 8mm Headphone Rubber
  • Aerial7 Phoenix Headphones
  • Nixon Whip Headphones
  • Skullcandy G.I. Headphones
  • Smith Holt Skullcandy Single-Shot Audio Helmet
  • Beats by Dre, PowerBeats Sport Headphones

If you have a set of one of these, or similar headphones then add your opinion with a comment. Is it style over substance? Are snowboarders better off with regular headphone brand, or can you get good sound from the likes of these?

I’m currently running the Philips/O’Neill colaboration “The Stretch” headphone. Altough they look a bit big they are pretty awesome. Completely lock out external sounds and provide sweet music quality. Is the website 🙂

Btw Gavin, long time no c. How’s the recovery going, got any snowboard plans yet ?

    Hey aalion,

how’s it going? So those headphones are good? I looked at them a while ago, and to be honest, I forgot about them – they might be good to include in this series.

Do you ride with them, or just use them for casual listening?

As for my plans – I’m hoping to hit the snowdome later this month, the 19th I think. As for the coming season, I’d like to spend a couple of weeks in Breck, and then maybe a week somewhere in Europe. I’m feeling better about my leg everyday 😉
